Flowchart on identifying scales

Identifying scales that you hear

You can identify scales that you hear becomes easier when you can hear easily by hearing the differences between each scale. I made this flow chart to help my VCE music theory students understand and remember these differences.

There are two main types of scales 'major something' scales and 'minor something' scales. First, work out which of the main type of scale you are hearing. Next listen for the number of notes in the scale, as well as which notes of the scale are altered.

Making music theory easy to understand is one of my strengths. If you would like help with understanding music theory or preparing for a VCE music theory exam, have a look at my music theory tutoring page.
